Illinois Bill to Fight Hunger Signed into Law

Illinoisans whose paychecks don’t go far enough to meet their families’ basic needs will have improved access to food assistance with the passage of Senate Bill 1847. The Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law (Shriver Center) and Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights applaud Governor Rauner for signing SB 1847 into law yesterday.

Using exclusively federal funds available through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), this legislation will help 40,000 low-income working families put adequate, nutritious food on the table for their children. Eligible households will receive an average monthly benefit of $125.

Moreover, SB 1847 will put $60 million into the hands of consumers to spend at local food retailers, thereby providing a significant boost to the economy at no cost to the state.

The Shriver Center and Heartland Alliance provided advocacy leadership on SB 1847 with help from numerous other supporting organizations across the state.

“Food banks report that low-income working families with children are increasingly relying on food pantries to meet their basic needs,” said Kimberly Drew, Senior Project Manager, Economic Security Policy, Heartland Alliance for Human Needs and Human Rights. “This legislation will go a long way toward meeting those families’ needs.”

Dan Lesser, Director of Economic Justice at the Shriver Center said, “SB 1847 takes an important and indispensable step toward ensuring that no one in Illinois goes to bed hungry.”
